Hong Kong - What to See and When to Go

Hong Kong is a lively, progressive metropolis, rich in heritage, and is one of the most exciting places on the planet to visit. With all that there is to see and do, get ready for one exciting and memorable vacation. To prepare you for one unique trip, here are some of the places you must see and the best times to visit them.

Visit the Colorful Markets

For a more in-depth view of Cantonese culture, the markets are the perfect place to go.

Visit the Kowloon side for the most authentic marketplaces, such as the Jade Market.

The Temple Street Night Market and the markets in the Mong Kok district are also great places to wander through for a little shopping and cultural indulgence. The best time to visit the markets in Hong Kong is anytime! They're open all year round.

Hike on Dragon's Back Trail

Take time out of your day to hike along the 6-mile trail that connects Wan Cham Shan and Shek O Peak. As you walk along the ridge, you'll see thick bamboo groves, forests, hillsides, waterfalls, and stunning views of mountain peaks and the open sea. Bring water, wear the right footwear, and be fully prepared for a good 2.5 to 3 hours hike. It's wise to begin your walk in the morning hours before it's too hot.

Attend a Festival around the Chinese New Year

Although there are several amazing festivals held throughout the year, the best celebrations occur around the Chinese New Year. This Chinese holiday is most actively celebrated.

Parades featuring enormous handmade dragons, live performances, and paper lanterns are just some of the things to expect. Just get ready to deal with a large, energetic crowd that you have never witnessed before.

Head on over to the Outer Islands

Instead of allocating your time to the busy city, step away to visit some of the 260 archipelagoes at the Outer Islands. Go hiking through chartreuse hills, kick back on a beach, wander through the beautiful forests to see the wildlife up close, or get lost in the fishing villages and temples. You can easily visit the Outer Islands any time of the year, but if you wish to avoid the extreme heat, visit any month other than July or August.
